Panoramica

Created by director Tim Burton with the release of the landmark feature film in 1988, Beetlejuice has evolved into a multi-media cult franchise centered on Betelgeuse, a crude and mischievous bio-exorcist ghost.

Over its multi-decade history, the franchise encompasses two feature films (the original 1988 film and 2024's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), a four-season animated television series comprising 94 episodes (1989–1991), a Tony-nominated Broadway musical adaptation, retro video games, comic books, and long-running stage shows at Universal Studios theme parks.

LO SAPEVI?Michael Keaton's line 'Nice f***ing model!' was entirely unscripted after a prop tree accidentally fell over on set.

Origini

The franchise originated from early script drafts that envisioned a significantly darker, hard-R black comedy where Beetlejuice was a winged demon or middle-eastern businessman attempting to kill the Deetz family and molest Lydia.

Early concepts also attributed his death to a botched hanging suicide, though canonical lore settled on him being a 14th-century Italian grave robber during the Black Plague who was poisoned by his cult-leader wife, Delores.

Studio executives initially considered Sammy Davis Jr. for the title role before producer David Geffen suggested Michael Keaton. Director Tim Burton encouraged Keaton to heavily improvise, leading to iconic unscripted moments like kicking a prop tree and exclaiming 'Nice f***ing model!', which reshaped the character into the beloved comedic trickster.

LO SAPEVI?Beetlejuice claims to have seen The Exorcist 167 times and considers it his favorite comedy.

Collezionismo

The collecting landscape for Beetlejuice spans vintage memorabilia from the late 1980s and 1990s through to modern high-end pop culture collectibles.

Key highlights for collectors include Mattel's Monster High 'Skullector' series, which released dedicated Beetlejuice dolls in 2021 and 2025. Other sought-after items include original 1990s Harvey Comics runs, classic NES and Game Boy cartridges developed by Rare, vintage action figures, and theatrical tie-in merchandise from both film eras and the Broadway musical run.

LO SAPEVI?Despite being the titular character, Beetlejuice only has 17 minutes of screen time in the original 1988 film.
