Overview
Created by David Jaffe and developed by Santa Monica Studio, God of War launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2.
The flagship PlayStation franchise encompasses over a dozen gaming titles across two major mythological eras (the Greek Saga and the Norse Saga).
Beyond mainline and handheld video games, the media universe includes official novelizations, comic book series, high-end artbooks, soundtracks, and a live-action television series adaptation in production.
Origins
During early development, God of War was created under the working title 'Dark Odyssey', intended as an homage to Homer's epic poem.
Although the development team favored the name, Sony marketing expressed concerns that the allusion was overly literary and failed to convey the visceral intensity director David Jaffe envisioned.
Unveiled officially in 2004 under the name God of War, the project was billed as a brutally savage journey through ancient Greek mythology.
