Panoramica

Created by comic creator Erik Larsen in 1992 as a founding title for Image Comics, Savage Dragon stands as one of the longest-running continuous independent comic book series written, penciled, and inked almost entirely by a single creator.

The franchise spans a massive comic run passing 250 issues and includes a 26-episode animated television adaptation from the mid-1990s.

LO SAPEVI?Erik Larsen originally created early versions of the Savage Dragon while still in elementary school.

Origini

The concept originated in Erik Larsen's childhood elementary school drawings, which were heavily influenced by Captain Marvel, Batman, Speed Racer, and The Incredible Hulk.

Larsen initially published early versions of the character as 'Paul Dragon' in the self-published black-and-white title Graphic Fantasy #1 in 1982, followed by Megaton #3 in 1986.

When Larsen left Marvel to co-found Image Comics in 1992, he completely redesigned the protagonist into a muscular, green-skinned amnesiac who emerges in a burning field in Chicago.

LO SAPEVI?Unlike most mainstream superhero titles, Savage Dragon characters age in real time over decades of publication.

Collezionismo

For comic collectors, the Holy Grails of the Savage Dragon franchise are its pre-Image independent debuts.

Graphic Fantasy #1 (1982) and Megaton #3 (1986) carry major collector interest due to their extremely low original print runs. Other key collectible items include the 1992 Image Comics three-issue miniseries #1 and the 1993 ongoing monthly series #1, which established the character as a flagship title of the 1990s independent comic boom.

LO SAPEVI?Issue #145 revealed that Dragon was originally Emperor Kurr, an amnesiac alien ruler who terrorized the universe.

Curiosità

• Erik Larsen created early versions of the Dragon during elementary school. • The comic universe ages in real-time, meaning characters age, raise families, and can die permanently.

• Dragon's origin was kept secret for over 100 issues until issue #145 revealed he was Emperor Kurr, an amnesiac galactic tyrant. • Creator Erik Larsen has written, drawn, inked, and lettered nearly every single issue of the main series independently.
